The Maruyoshi Flax Cutter is a great hand tool for cutting all fibrous plants, like flax leaves and cabbage tree leaves to vines and ivy.
PLEASE NOTE – this is not a wood saw, and the serrated blade only works when you are pulling the blade back towards yourself. It is not designed to be operated in a saw cutting motion (back and forward) and for best results, hold the plant in one hand and draw the blade back with the other hand in a slicing motion. Always take care however, the blades are extremely sharp.
The MARUYOSHI FLAX CUTTER is a great hand tool for cutting all fibrous plants, like flax and cabbage tree leaves.
Flax, cabbage trees, yuccas, and kikuyu grass are all familiar features in many New Zealand gardens. They thrive in our harsh coastal environments and often add great structure to outdoor spaces, but their tough, fibrous growth can make them challenging to keep tidy.
This tool is incredibly lightweight and forged from high-quality Japanese high carbon steel, rather than the stainless steel commonly used in many other sickles. The blade is heat-treated for durability and fitted with a reinforced back bar, which helps provide additional strength and stability during use.
While the blade’s sharp serrations make it look like a versatile cutting tool, it’s important to use it as intended. The flax cutter is not suitable for cutting wood and should never be used with a sawing or chopping motion on hard plant material. Instead, it works by pulling the serrated blade toward you, allowing it to slice cleanly through fibrous plants. When used properly in this way, the blade is designed to remain strong without bending, snapping, or breaking.
